I Learned Early That Your Word Matters
My work in construction began in 1999, but the principles behind Dave Jordan Contracting started long before I put my name on the business.
They came from my grandfather, J.H. Worden: listen to people, do what you say, and do it to the best of your ability.
It Started as Summer Camp
When I was 14, "summer camp" meant working on my grandfather's paving crew. For the next several summers, I learned the business by working alongside him and the people he trusted.
At 19, I was studying nursing when my grandfather became ill. I left school, joined the crew full-time, and took responsibility for customer relationships, sales, service, and scheduling. It was a decision that changed the direction of my life.
When we lost him in 2015, I carried those lessons forward.
Experience That Grew Beyond Asphalt
Asphalt taught me that the quality of the finished work depends on what happens before anyone sees it—the preparation, the planning, the timing, and the people doing the work.
My experience later expanded into Richmond's residential design-build space, including additions, kitchens, bathrooms and other renovation work. That gave me a broader view of how materials, structures and individual spaces need to work together. More importantly, it taught me to look beyond the project itself and understand how the homeowner wants to use it.
That experience still shapes the way I approach projects today, whether we're creating an outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of the home or improving one of the spaces inside it. The project may be different, but the starting point is the same: understand what isn't working, how you want to live in the space, and what it could become.
Why I Put My Name on It
I started Dave Jordan Contracting to take responsibility for the experience as well as the finished work. I wanted to build a company where people feel heard, expectations are clear, and thoughtful ideas are carried through with care.
I'm drawn to projects where thoughtful changes can make a real difference in how someone uses their home. That might mean creating a place to gather outside, rethinking a kitchen that no longer works for the family, or simply finding a better solution for the space in front of us. Putting my name on the company means standing behind that work and the relationships that make it possible.
